Hello Anthony. Late to the party but the idea of writing the fretboard out is 100% useful. Ive only been playing since last October, i did have a bass in my youth (80s) but nothing come of it., but one of the first things i did on my return was draw out the fretboard and notes. I also grabbed a bunch of ziplock bags , overlayed them on the notes and marked out the scales, Arpeggios, triads etc. So at a moments notice i could practice whatever I fancied by just overlaying the ziplock bag. It works a treat. What i like about your shows - You! and your ability to communicate complex theories to a begginer like me. Now, what would I consider an improvement. I think just slowing down a bit, mebbe at the cost of some content but that could be a quick "short" video mebbe. Great channel and a great tutor. Thank you for taking the time to share your remarkable knowledge of a beautiful instrument. Peace ❤ Ps: I know this is an old show now but felt id like to contribute to your shows end comments.

The phrasing were off and the song was rushed, not to mention the mess ups. There's a reason why Jaco spent 12 years on this song. Watch Modern electric bass Jaco Pastorius. You will get the parts you messed up on and learn the techniques.

hey anthony.. in regards to your comment about it's waste a time trying to think the minor scale a separate entity.. can't you argue when you're thinking of improv over a minor song, it's helpful to keep in my that the minor i is the tonic? .. unless you do it differently?

Awesome video Anthony. Thank you for sharing. Crossing strings with the picking hand is a challenge for me when it comes to building speed. Can you give some advise on how you developed such great speed and dexterity with your picking technique. Do you use mostly rest or free strokes when playing faster lines? Are hammer-ons and pull-offs a good way to increase speed? Would like to know your thoughts. Thanks again.

Thank you for your helpful videos, Anthony. I have been watching them as an amateur bass player who wants to start playing jazz and your insight is incredible. I like the point of the scales having notes in common. If you think about it, any two scales of seven notes must have an overlap of two notes or greater, because 7 + 7 = 14, and that's two more notes than we have in the chromatic scale at least. However, each hexatonic scale has precisely one scale that shares no notes with it. For whole tone scales it's a major fourth up, so C whole tone scale shares no notes with F whole tone scale. For pentatonic scales, there's tons of non-overlapping pentatonics (21), a few non-overlapping hexatonics (7), and only one seven tone scale. I try not to get in my head too much about music theory, though. For me, it's too easy to go deep into that and forget about learning how to actually play. It's a trap. But I find it endlessly fascinating so I wanted to share.

I started playing bass about more than a year ago and hope to continue for the next ten. I managed to play at least an hour a day. Your videos are by far the most honest and helpful that I found for someone who really wants to improve. Maybe that's cruel but if you are not willing to do these kinds of challenges, you will lose a lot of time and eventually give up. I really hope that these triads will help me to have a better technique and a better understanding of my instrument. Thanks.

Hey man I love your transcriptions and playing! They've helped me out a lot. I watched your Donna Lee one recently and it was a big aid for me in getting it together. I think my fingerings are a bit more accurate to Jaco's so once I can nail the tempo, I'll be posting my own to share with the world my interpretation. Hopefully in a few weeks or so. You talk at 10:50 about the bend and your surprise that he nails it, but have you considered the possibility that there's a little magic trick going on here and "the spoon is not real?" I was checking this solo out and I'm almost completely convinced that from the solo to the end, he overdubbed the entire bass performance in studio, but slowed it down with a varispeed tape deck and performed it a minor third lower that it sounds here. So in other words, he performed his solo in A rather than C, that bent E is actually a C#, and he played it much slower than it's presented on the record. I know it's a live record, but I'm still pretty sure that the entire solo onwards was redone in studio. I'm curious to know your thoughts? Cheers brother!
